A large protein produced by fibroblasts in the dermis. It resembles a triple helix, with three chains of a hundred or so amino acids. Its multiple functions include imbuing the skin with its physical properties (tonicity, etc.). It is the main component of skin and also of bones and teeth. As we age, collagen fibres become hard and fuse together, making the skin more rigid and less supple.
