Sun goddess: how to take care of your skin while tanning

We’ve all been guilty of spending too much time in the sun, but over time, our skin will start to feel the effects. So, how can we get our tan on without damaging our skin long-term?

Avoiding skin damage

While spending time outdoors helps boost the body’s Vitamin D levels, it’s important to be aware of the dangers sun damage poses to our skin’s ability to age well. The figures make for uncomfortable reading: 80% of skin aging is associated with repeated exposure to UV rays, with even daily levels  gradually reducing the thickness of the epidermis. As well as excess UV rays, humidity can also destabilize skin’s defenses, which also makes it harder for skin’s natural barriers to deal with redness. Long-term, sun damage encourages the spread of free radicals, which destroy skin cells’ structure. This slows down collagen production and accelerates the signs of aging.

Replenishing your skin after a day in the sun

Naturally, we tend to perspire more in warmer weather. When dehydrated, the skin’s mineral levels take a nosedive, meaning it’s crucial to refresh skin by drinking enough water and ensuring your mineral intake remains stable.
